Curriculum Resources - Lyle Story

Curriculum ResourcesThe Greek to Me Multimedia Tutorial builds upon the text Greek to Me and introduces an innovative method to learn Koine Greek faster, easier and more efficiently than conventional methods, such as the "painful" and ineffective method of rote memorization. The system uses cartoon images (mnemonic aids) to help students learn grammatical concepts and principles, vocabulary words and rules, thereby removing most of the tedious and ineffective rote-memorization associated with the learning of biblical Greek.

The approach uses:

  • Sight
  • Color graphics (cartoons)
  • Animation
  • Audio instruction (different voices and different personalities)
  • Audio pronunciation of words
  • Interactive practice (with scoring)
  • Interactive assignments and quizzes (with ability to check for accuracy)
  • Music
  • Humor
  • Enrichment sections that demonstrate how concepts bear upon NT interpretation
  • Flexibility for self-study or ability to send in assignments and quizzes/exams (hyper-links) to the instructor of any academic institution.
  • Pull-down menus
  • "Click-on" and mouse-driven features

Memory experts (learning theorists and popular teachers) advocate the use of SUBSTITUTE (ASSOCIATION) WORDS and LINK SYSTEMS (PEG-SYSTEMS) for learning facts, foreign languages, items, lists, etc. Throughout the tutorial students find substitute words to aid in the mastery of the entire Greek grammar (including 600 vocabulary words-words that occur 25 times or more in the Greek NT). The practices and assignments use each word at least 5 times. Not only are individual words and endings learned by substitute words and linking-but the entire grammar incorporates the time-tested memory techniques. Virtually every new concept (case, tense, participles, etc.) has its own mnemonic device.

Egg ArrowAn example of one vocabulary word may help illustrate the approach: Observe the Greek vocabulary word, pronounced e-gei-row, and it means "I raise up." By itself, the word with its meaning represents the unknown or intangible. Conventional rote methods stress repeated vocalization of the word with its meaning with questionable results in view. However, we can use English SUBSTITUTE WORDS and LINK them together in a picture, to establish a link with what is known or can be visualized. Memory experts speak of the "shock value" or "out of proportion" use of images to help with memory since we more easily remember unusual things.

What we see is a young would-be Robin Hood who says, "I raise up an egg-arrow" ("I raise up"). Look at the egg-shaped arrow (a ridiculous image) which the little Robin Hood "raises up." We will not easily forget the picture because of its ridiculous character. We have taken the unknown (e-gei-row-"I raise up") and related it to something we can visualize (known-raising up an egg-arrow), and through an absurd picture, we have learned the unknown and locked it in our memory bank for ready reference, use and long-term retention.

The system aims to encourage and motivate students to learn both the grammar and vocabulary of Koine Greek in a creative and productive manner. It approaches the student in a helpful and user-friendly manner. The approach is "disarmingly" effective. At first glance, the system appears to be non-scholarly, since cartoon images are used to convey grammar, words and endings; however, the system contains more Scriptural examples and "true-to-koine" translations (Greek NT, LXX and apostolic fathers) than are found in other Greek grammars of a more conventional format. The approach is new, yet it has been tried and tested with thousands of students and the response has been well worth the effort. Students will find that their further work in biblical, theological and church history studies, and teaching/preaching preparation will be enhanced by a solid foundation in Greek grammar.
